Tidy Gardens | Weeding Technician (Seasonal)
Braintree, MA — Serving Hingham & the South Shore
Tidy Gardens is a small, professional gardening company specializing in detailed residential garden care using quiet, ecological practices. We work without chemical herbicides or gas-powered equipment and place a strong emphasis on thoughtful, high-quality work.
Our Weeding Technician position is the entry point into Tidy Gardens’ Fine Gardening Apprenticeship Program. Professional gardening experience is not required.
The Role
This position focuses primarily on hand weeding and detailed garden bed maintenance while building the foundational skills needed for professional fine gardening.
The work is physical, repetitive, and detail-oriented and includes both independent and collaborative work across residential properties.
As part of Tidy Gardens’ Fine Gardening Apprenticeship Program, training, feedback, and skill development continue throughout the season, whether you’re working independently or alongside another gardener.
This is a strong fit for someone who enjoys working outdoors, takes satisfaction in detailed work, and is interested in developing real gardening and horticultural skills over time.
What You’ll Be Doing
- Hand-pulling weeds throughout garden beds
- Learning to distinguish weeds from desirable garden plants
- Cleaning and maintaining garden bed edges and hardscape areas
- Basic deadheading and plant cleanup
- Removing garden debris and leaving properties clean and finished
- Following detailed property-specific instructions and maintenance notes
- Learning to recognize what a thoroughly maintained garden should look like
- Caring for tools and maintaining an organized work area
- Working independently at assigned residential properties as proficiency develops
Fine Gardening Apprenticeship
Fine gardening requires more than learning a list of tasks. It requires developing your eye, learning plants, understanding seasonal garden care, and building the judgment to recognize what a garden needs.
The Weeding Technician position begins that process with the fundamentals.
You’ll receive hands-on training in:
- Hand weeding and weed identification
- Basic ornamental plant identification
- Detailed garden maintenance
- Deadheading and basic plant care
- Thoroughness and quality standards
- Professional work habits and tool care
- Reading and following property-specific maintenance plans
- Developing efficient work habits without sacrificing quality
As these foundational skills become consistent, training can expand into more advanced horticultural work including pruning, perennial care, containers, planting, plant health, and seasonal garden maintenance.
Progression through the apprenticeship is based on demonstrated skill, quality, reliability, and readiness for additional responsibility — not simply time in the position.
Who This Is For
This role is a strong fit for someone who:
- Enjoys physical, hands-on outdoor work
- Is comfortable with repetitive, detail-focused tasks
- Takes pride in clean, thorough results
- Is curious about plants and interested in learning
- Works well independently
- Welcomes instruction and feedback
- Is reliable, consistent, and self-motivated
- Can follow detailed instructions without constant supervision
- Wants to build practical gardening skills through hands-on experience
Who This Is NOT For
This role is probably not a fit if you:
- Are looking for traditional landscaping, construction, or heavy equipment work
- Are only interested in planting or garden design
- Get bored easily with repetitive work
- Prefer a highly social or crew-based work environment
- Prioritize finishing quickly over doing thorough work
- Aren’t interested in receiving feedback or learning new techniques
Requirements
- Valid driver’s license and reliable transportation
- Ability to travel independently between properties
- Reliable weekday availability
- Able to perform sustained physical outdoor work including bending, kneeling, and squatting
- Able to lift approximately 25–40 lbs
- Comfortable working outdoors in typical seasonal weather
Schedule
- Seasonal: Spring through Fall
- Full-time and part-time positions available
- Monday–Friday, daytime hours
- Independent travel between assigned properties
Compensation
- Paid trial shift starting at $18/hour
- $18–$22/hour based on experience, demonstrated skill, quality, reliability, and independence

We believe good gardeners continue learning throughout their careers. Feedback, collaboration, and continued horticultural development are part of the work at every level.
However, this position sits beyond our Fine Gardening Apprenticeship Program and assumes an established foundation of professional gardening knowledge and practical skill.
